Should I build my own agent with ChatGPT instead of buying one?

If you can code and a chat window is enough, yes. What you can't build in an afternoon is everything around it: for it to answer your WhatsApp you need Meta's WhatsApp Business Platform, an approved number, and something running all the time — and Meta charges per delivered template message, whether you build it yourself or buy it.

Where we don't win

If you can code, building it is perfectly viable

An assistant that answers well on a web page doesn't take long to put together with the tools that already exist, and it costs less than any plan. If that's you, build it. This comparison is about what shows up afterward: the channels, the number, what happens at 3 in the morning, and who fixes it the day something changes.

We don't put a price in the right-hand column, on purpose

“Building it yourself” has no list price: it depends on your hours and on how much you end up using it. Making up a figure so the comparison looks better would be exactly what this site does not do. The only thing you can put a number on is what Meta charges, and both sides pay it the same.

What you're buying is not the model

Anyone can use the model and it costs next to nothing per reply. What you pay for here is that it's connected, that it doesn't make things up, that it hands off when it doesn't know, that the conversation gets logged, and that someone answers when it fails.

Frequently asked questions

Can I connect ChatGPT to my WhatsApp directly?

Not directly. For a program to answer a company's WhatsApp you need Meta's WhatsApp Business Platform, with an approved number, and something that receives messages and replies around the clock. The model is one piece of that, not the whole thing.

Do I avoid Meta's fees if I build it myself?

No. Meta has charged per delivered template message since July 1, 2025, priced by country and by category, and it charges the same whether your program sends the message or ours does. It's a platform cost, not a provider cost.

What changes on October 1, 2026?

Meta starts charging for service messages — the reply within the 24-hour window — at the same rates as utility and authentication in each market, and adds a free tier of 1,000 a month per number. On the same date it starts charging for utility messages sent in reply to the user.

How long does it take to build my own?

No one can honestly answer that in hours: it depends on your experience and on how many channels you want. What we can tell you is what you'll have to solve besides the model: the number, the always-on server, everything it needs to know about your business, the handoff to a person, and the record of what was said.

When is it worth building it myself?

When there's someone technical on the team who is going to maintain it, when one channel is enough, and when the business can live with it getting answers wrong sometimes. If the agent is going to handle customers on WhatsApp unsupervised, the real work isn't making it work: it's keeping it working.

Where the numbers come from
